San Roque
Santa Barbara Neighborhood
SAN ROQUE SANTA BARBARA
San Roque home building began in the 1920s and it has the distinction of being the first "out of the downtown" area of Santa Barbara. Characterized by small post WWII custom homes - many include hardwood floors - you will also see a harmonious blend of architecture from Spanish Colonial to English Tudor. Extending above Foothill Road, higher elevation San Roque feature larger view homes on acre-plus lots.
An economically stable area, San Roque is a vital commercial area - not quite like downtown - it is more local and less tourist-oriented. Almost all commercial property is on State Street which serves as the southern boundary.
Residents find it is a very convenient location - close to town - with no need to get on the freeway to get there. At the far boundary of the north side are the La Cumbre and Five-Points shopping centers offering most amenities for the community.
With the weather consistently warmer and sunnier than neighborhoods nearer the ocean - often by 10 degrees in the summer - it is one of Santa Barbara's choicest neighborhoods.

History of San Roque
San Roque became the first suburb outside of the downtown square city blocks. In 1925 San Roque was laid out with wide curving streets with luxuriant landscaping with a blending of architectural styles including Spanish Colonial, English Tutor, French Normandy California Redwood, Italianate, and American Colonial.
Many San Roque homeowners probably don't realize that their homes occupy land once under development as the San Roque Country Club, incorporated in 1926. The depression caused the cancellation of the plans for the partially completed course. In 1939 a half-acre of the course was given to the City for the "San Roque Park" at Chuparosa and Canon Drives. The northern most portions became 25-acre Stevens Park, named for Ralph Stevens, a notable park superintendent.
Beaches/Parks/Entertainment
BEACHES/PARKS/ENTERTAINMENT
Stevens Park is a continuous canyon park reaching up San Roque Canyon to the historic trails of the Santa Ynez Range, this park joins the primitive canyon park north of Foothill Road beginning a continuous network of trails that are much enjoyed today. Stevens Park includes a creek side playground and reservable picnic and barbecue sites.
San Roque Creek at Stevens Park: A Community Creek Stewardship Project
In fall 2006, the Creeks Division, Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, and Santa Barbara Beautiful teamed-up to develop and implement a Community Creek Stewardship Project and native plant demonstration on San Roque Creek at Stevens Park. Over a series of community planting days, more than 75 neighbors, volunteers and students planted over 400 native plants.
Golfing in Santa Barbara is Excellent
John Dickson of SantaBarbara.com says, "Santa Barbara County boasts six public 18-hole golf courses, four of which are within a half hour of downtown. Three of these four boast championship level play. The fourth is adjacent to San Roque and is one of the busiest municipal courses in the country (and some years THE busiest). Each of our city's golf courses is nationally recognized in its own way."
Willowglen Park is a neighborhood park with a playground, soccer/baseball field and street parking. The play structure is especially great for children that have just started walking.
San
Roque Ranch is located in the foothills behind Santa Barbara. San Roque Ranch is one of the largest undeveloped properties along the city limits. The land was purchased by environmental investment group Cima del Mundo, which donated an easement on 880 acres of the 1,200-acre ranch. The easement includes the rich upper riparian woodland along San Roque Creek, reaching all the way up to La Cumbre Peak. Cima del Mundo gave up the right to build homes on five existing land parcels. A productive avocado orchard - and land developable for a few home sites - remains south of the conservation easement. The riparian woodland, chaparral scrub and towering sandstone formations of San Roque Ranch - now owned by Land Trust supporters Michael and Robin Klein - will always remain a spectacular scenic backdrop to Santa Barbara. The Arroyo Burro public trail easement crosses the ranch, offering hikers a close up view of the nearby easement land.
